Sister Margaret Shepherd, R.I.P.
Sister Margaret Shepherd, MM, Missioner and Educator
whom many MCS and MSS students
knew from their Hong Kong days, went back to the Lord at 96.
Sister Margaret Shepherd, MM, who served for many years in Hong Kong, went back to the Lord on December 6, 2015 at Maryknoll Sisters’ Centre, Ossining, NY.
Sister Margaret entered Maryknoll Sisters at their novitiate in Valley Park, MO, on October 30, 1947 from St. Agnes Parish, San Francisco, CA, receiving the religious name, Sister Rose Martin. She had her First Profession of Vows on May 8, 1950 in Valley Park, then worked at Motherhouse from 1950 to 1952 at Bethany Convent, and later at the residence for elderly and infirm Maryknoll Sisters in Ossining from 1952 to 1957.
Sister received with thrill her first appointment to Hong Kong, which she had long desired, teaching at Maryknoll Convent School in Kowloon Tong from 1957 to 1968. She then returned to the United States where she completed her college education with a B.S. in Education from Mary Rogers College, Maryknoll, NY in 1970.
Sister Margaret returned to Hong Kong and taught Religious Education, English Language and Literature to secondary school students at Maryknoll Sisters School for some years, and went back again to teach at Maryknoll Convent School from 1981 to 1984, and from 1989 until 1993.
Apart from her continual missionary works with various nationalities of different walks of life, Sister also shared the Gospel and Christian values with maximum security prisoners whilst in Hong Kong.
A vespers service was held for Sister Margaret on December 9, 2015 in the Chapel of the Annunciation at the Maryknoll Sisters Centre at NY. A Mass of Christian burial followed on December 10, 2015, also at the Centre.
A Requiem Mass is being arranged here in Toronto by some past students of Maryknoll Sisters School for Sister Margaret Shepherd for :
Date : Saturday, January 16, 2016
Time : 10:00am
Place : St. Gabriel Passionist Parish, 670 Sheppard Avenue East.
Please join to pay Sister Margaret our last respect and to celebrate her life !

Sister Miriam Xavier (1913 -2015), R.I.P.
We received the sad news that Sister Miriam Xavier Mug passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 3:00 PM, after a very brief illness at the Maryknoll Sisters Centre, New York.
Sister Teresa Leung writes, “Sister would be 102 on September 22, 2015. Sister was not sick but she had a hard time in breathing. For the last few days, she was on oxygen. Sister was very alert until the end. Last evening when the Sisters said “Good Night” to her and asked her to rest well, she said, ‘How can I rest well, when you all are in and out all the time like an Irish Wake.’
She always asked me to make her Juk (Chinese congee) when she had no appetite. Yesterday, I made congee with chicken stock, dried scallops, jumbo shrimp and Chinese cabbage. She thanked me for it and said she would have it later as she had just finished her meal. Sister also said she was not going to die during Holy Week because we had too much to do.”
The Funeral Arrangements are as follows:
Wake – Monday, April 6, 2015 at 4:15 p.m
Funeral Eucharistic Liturgy – Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 11:00 a.m.
Location: Main Chapel of Maryknoll Sisters Motherhouse at Ossining, New York.
